PATRICK J. COLLINS

Interview part 4 :

When the music is good …

13/ What are your favorite games ? And which are those you like for their soundtrack ?

Well for Arcade games, I mentioned earlier that I own 11 coin-ops. They are: Space Ace, Dragon’s Lair, Q*Bert, Gauntlet II, Asteroids Deluxe, Pac-Man, Pengo, Star Castle, Rally-X, R-type, and Galaga. But some of my other favorites are: Dark Stalkers, Street Fighter II, Stun Runner, Golden Axe, Tempest, Frogger, Tetris, Columns, Cloak & Dagger, Jungle Hunt, Donkey Kong, Missle Command, Tapper, Darius,Thunder Blade, Galaxy Force ... I can go on forever.

For home systems, I am a huge Vectrex fan. I love Solar Quest, Spike, Blitz, and Cosmic Chasm best. For the 8-bit NES, I love Mega Man II, Metroid, Zelda, Ice Hockey, Section Z, and Kirby’s Adventure. For Sega Genesis, I love Dr. Robotniks Mean Bean Machine, Sonic the Hedgehog, Strider, Hertzog Zwei, Maui Mallard, and Thunder Force II. For 16-Bit Nintendo, I really liked Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Bust-a-move, Pilot Wings, and F-ZERO. For Turbo Grafix 16 - Ys (books 1,2 and 3), Valis II, and Bonk... For Neo-Geo-- Magician Lord, Fatal Fury, and Puzzle-Bobble. For next generation systems. I haven’t really gotten into them. I can’t really enjoy playing games in 3D, and it seems like thats all thats being made these days.

For Computer games, for the apple ][, I loved Sneakers, Ruski Duck, Sun Dog, Miner 2049er, Lode Runner, Spy Vs. Spy, and Threshlold. For the Atari ST: Mouse Trap, Airball, Dungeon Master (I and II), and Time Bandit. For the IBM PC, I really enjoyed Doom 2, Kyrandia (I, II, and III), and Thexder (and of course the most entertaining of the ancient PC world was Dr. Sbaitso, though thats not a game).

For their music : Darius, Metroid, Zelda, Ice Hockey, Kirby’s Adventure, Dr. Robotniks Mean Bean Machine, Sonic the Hedgehog, Pilot Wings, F-ZERO, Y’s (1,2 and 3), Valis II, Thunder Blade, Galaxy Force, and Airball.

14/ Do you want to create a game one day ?

No, If I was going to create something nonmusical, I would much rather create a short film or TV pilot... Or an electronic circuit of some kind.

15/ What is your favorite memory in your game audio development experiences ?

When I was working on Gargoyles, I had seen a TV commercial for Sega, where this flight attendant on an airline said “Coffee, Tea, SEGA??!?!” (literally screaming SEGA).. And I thought this was really funny, and so I created a digitized audio sample of myself screaming “Sega”, this was implemented in the game when you first turn on the genesis and the Sega logo came on the screen. So, apparently the VPs at disney all had a product meeting with the president of Disney Interactive, and they put in Gargoyles, and heard “SEGA!!!!!!!!!!!”... Needless to say, it caught them all by surprise, and I was immediately informed by management that it was unacceptable for a Disney game to have something like that in it. I thought it was so funny though, and cool.... We ended up leaving the sample in there, and you can access it by secret codes during game play (START-C-A-LEFT,LEFT, B-A,LEFT,LEFT) -- As well as secret techno song I composed for the programmer. SHH! No one is supposed to know about this.

And for the word of the end : what are your projects for 2003 and for the next years of this great life ?

I am planning to return to California Institute of the Arts and study for my masters in piano performance. During this time, I will be focused on continuing to write solo material for my album, and eventually within the next year I will be forming a band and performing around LA. I have to be very focused on my goals in order to make my dreams a reality. So that’s the plan for now. Write great songs, perform well, and find a record label that is interested in me !

Thank you for the interview Patrick and good luck for your futur projects ! It was a really pleasure to speak with you ...
