PATRICK J. COLLINS

Interview part 3 :

the artist and the music … …

9/ About your personal songs like “Sweet Bliss” and “Killed Yourself”, what kind of artist singer and composer do you want to be ?

I just want to be performer and composer. I see myself, eventually doing mainstream commercial type pop music, but I always want to keep it interesting and unique. My demos currently aren’t by any means at the level of quality that I want the finished project to be, but it was getting rather expensive for me as far as studio time goes, so I had to say eventually this is good enough for now. But I also want to be doing work as a pianist accompanying or playing for whatever/whoever (especially classical concerts).

10/ And what about your projects for personal songs ? What’s new ?

Well, unfortunately not a whole lot in the song writing world is new.. I think my financial struggles right now have taken a lot out of me creatively.. But I am going to take some serious action this year (and next) as far as writing and getting some kind of a band together and start performing live around LA. This year so far, I have pretty much been spending a lot of my time learning some solo piano music. There was a blind stride/jazz pianist by the name of Art Tatum who lived until the 50s, and he is one of my favorites.. So I have been learning one of his pieces by ear note for note (there is no sheet music for this song).. So I’m almost done, and when I am, I plan to create a web page with some video streaming of my performance (available on : http://collinatorstudios.com/tatum ) and you will be able to compare it to the original recording (just something for fun I wanted to do)... I also just finished scoring an independent short film that's going to be entered into a San Francisco film festival. If anyone’s interested in hearing that soundtrack, I have the music track streamable at: http://collinatorstudios.com/music

11/ What are your influences in general for your music ?

The first mainstream artists I heard as a kid were: New Order, Depeche Mode, Safire, Stacey Q, Sweet Sensation, Madonna, Jody Watley, Cathy Dennis, Clan of Xymox, Sheena Easton, Karyn White, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Belinda Carlile.. But I loved practically everything in its own way. I was a fan of rappers like LL Cool J, Snap, Bel Biv Devoe, etc.... And I loved instrumental music by Vangelis, Wendy Carlos, and Tangerine Dream. I had a friend who visited Japan often, and he would bring back cds and cassettes of remixes (dance, orchestral, pop) of classic video games like Kid Icarus, Zelda, Super Mario Bros., Metroid, Darius, Bubble Bobble, Rastan, Legend of Kage, Tokoyo, etc... So I heard all this stuff and was really into that as well (which probably had a great deal to do with my interest and drive to get into the game industry).

12/ Are you satisfied with the technical material that the technology offers ? Do you have specific technique needs?

In general, yes.. I think that things are really developed well at this stage, and you can get any kind of sound that you want. The only things I am very annoyed by is the current sequencer I use now; Logic. I think it really sucks. It has lots of great features, but the people who programmed and designed it have no idea what “user friendly” means. I have contacted Apple a few times to try to offer them some feedback on Logic, but they said they can’t legally accept any feedback unless I pay them to become a developer. So... that's that. Logic is great as far as the tools and capabilities, but the interface is really not designed for a musician.. I told Apple, you guys should rename the product to “illogic”.
